How to extract audio and video samples, remix audio with video, and apply filters with VirtualDub, add tracks and apply filters with Audacity, then very briefly how to embed an avi file into an OpenOffice.org Impress document. The three programs covered are all free and open source.
If you are using Windows or Mac OS X, Audacity can be downloaded for free from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/. This program also has a native Linux version which should be available through your distribution's package manager. If your distribution does not have an Audacity package, the source can be downloaded and compiled from the website.
VirtualDub is only available for the Windows platform, although it also runs quite nicely under Linux (and hopefully OS X) using Wine (http://www.winehq.org - check your distribution's package manager). It can be downloaded from http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/.
Impress is part of the Java based OpenOffice.org office suite, which is available as a free download at http://www.openoffice.org/. There are native versions for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux (check your package manager).
